Lanzhou University Second Hospital was founded in 1932. It became independent on January 26, 1959 and was incorporated into Lanzhou University on November 18, 2004 together with Lanzhou Medical College.

    The hospital is located on the foot of White Dagoba Mountain and the bank of the Yellow River, and situated on Cui Ying Men Street, within downtown of Lanzhou, having transport facilities. Zhi Gong Hall, the exam hall in Qing Dynasty in the hospital, is the site of the former Lanzhou University. Thanks to the efforts of several generations, the hospital has made great advance in medical care, medical education and medical research in the past seven decades. As a Grade Ⅲ-A comprehensive hospital approved by the Ministry of Health and a national baby-friendly hospital, it focuses on disease prevention, healthcare, medical treatment, rehabilitation, emergency medical services, medical education and medical research. It is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, complete range of departments, and reasonably-divided sub-departments.

    At present, the hospital has 2100 authorized beds. It receives 500,000 outpatients, 24,000 inpatients, 20,000 emergency patients, and performs 10,000 operations annually. It has three independent research institutes: Orthopedics Institute, Neurology Institute, and Urology Institute. And there is a provincial-level major medical research office ：Research Office for Digestive System Tumors. Today it has 247 technicians with senior professional titles, 258 with Master’s degree, 51with Doctor’s degree, and 3 with post-doctoral degree. Among its staff, 11 are awarded special allowance by the State Council, 2 are outstanding contribution experts approved by the Ministry of Health, 31 are provincial talents, over 80 are members of the standing board, committee and editorial board in national academic organizations and academic journals, and several are chairmen of branches of Chinese Medical Association in Gansu Province.
      The hospital consists of 11 provincial key departments (Department of Orthopedics, Department of Urology, Department of Neurosurgery, Department of Neurology, Department of Ophthalmology, Department of Dermatology, Department of Otolaryngology, Department of Renal Disease, Department of Anesthesiology, Department of Diabetes, Department of Emergency, Department of liver, Gallbladder and Pancreas Surgery, Digestive Endoscopy Center etc), continuing training bases of laparoscope, b-ultrasound, endoscope, surgery, medical laboratory, emergency medicine, ophthalmic microsurgery, transplant technology, and a national base of clinical pharmacology.
